PURPOSE OF THE CONTEST AND FUNDING The Fondation Vevey, Ville d'Images, is launching the Grand prix européen des premiers films, Prix de Vevey, , a contest intended to provide funding for the production of first films made after having obtained a degree or diploma in film-making. Using academic institutions as a springboard, the contest is aimed at film directors who graduated between 1999 and 2001. Candidates will be asked to submit a project for a film that can be produced for the amount of the award, i.e. for _10,000 per project. The contest is endowed with a total of _30,000 in prize money. In principle, three projects will be funded during this first event, although only one of the three winning projects will be awarded the exclusive mention "Prix de Vevey". The films must be completed no later than 30 June 2002. The purpose of the contest is to encourage the production of personal films, by interceding at the juncture where recently graduated film-makers must face the public for the first time as authors of independent works. The rationale for the contest is based on four elements:
Films produced in the context of this contest will have their own special programme during the Festival IMAGES '02 cinéma, which will take place from 22 September to 6 October 2002. This event, organised in conjunction with Swiss academic institutions offering training in cinema and video arts, will include a special section devoted to degree or diploma films and first films (projections, conference, meetings). The Foundation will be associated with the promotion of films emanating from the contest by involving itself in their publishing (print or transfer), their subtitling (in French), or their distribution, depending on the case. CONTEST PROTOCOL By film, we mean any self-contained audiovisual production which can be shown in public projection, either cinematographic (16 mm, 35 mm) or video (multistandard). No distinction shall be made a priori as to the type of film, or the production medium. Projects which would represent made-to-order work shall not be considered for entry. The contest shall be judged on the basis of the dossier. Candidates shall not be interviewed personally. However, they may be asked to provide additional information at any time prior to the jury deliberation. Dossiers may be submitted in German, English, Spanish, French or Italian. The dossiers shall be examined by an international jury composed of five people, no less than two of who will be women. CONTEST RULES The contest is open to graduates from accredited European schools or faculties of cinematographic arts, from the classes of 1999/2000/2001. The selection of accredited institutions may vary from one contest to another. The project must be submitted, in five copies, in the form o
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA AND AWARD OF PRIZE MONEY The jury will judge the dossiers on the basis of two main criteria:
The winning projects will receive one half of the prize money when the prize is awarded. The other half will be paid after a copy of the finished film has been submitted within the prescribed time limit. AGENDA AND SUBMISSION OF DOSSIERS Deadline for submission of dossiers: 30 September
