"Emporte-moi!" in Vevey in September
IMAGES’04, the international film and photography festival, will take place in Vevey from 3 to 26 September. This event, which focuses around the evocative theme of Carry me away! Ecstasy, Possession and other Raptures, will lead the spectator into a world full of discoveries and emotions.
Now combining two major visual art fields, IMAGES’04 offers a multi-faceted presentation.
The festival encourages creative work by the upcoming generation, with two highly prized project competition awards, le Grand prix européen des premiers films (trois prix de 10'000 Euros) and le Grand prix international de photographie (20'000 Euros).
In the area of films the jury selected three short or medium-length films last autumn, which were elaborated, developed and completed within a year: Al Hilwa Di by Namir Abdel Messeeh (France), Herr Würfel by Rafael Sommerhalder (Switzerland) and Almost by Daniel Mitelpunk (GB).
On the occasion of the awards ceremony held on Saturday, 4 September, these first works will be presented as a premiere to the public.
In the area of photography, the jury’s award went to the Austrian artist Aglaïa Konrad for her project Desert Cities – Retake. It also honoured several other contestants with prizes in kind.
In co-operation with Nestlé and the printers Genoud, a third competition has been launched this year. It is aimed at the Swiss Schools of Art and awards a student’s work on the topic: Carry me away!... & Food.
Finally, Rocco de Santis, the musician and composer of Grecia Salentina, has been commissioned to compose a score for Dovjenko’s silent movie masterpiece Earth, and to perform it live during the film projection.
A spectacle in its own right, the opening ceremony will be celebrated on Friday, 3 September. It will start off with an official opening of all exhibition venues in town. Guests and visitors are then invited to continue the evening on Place Scanavin, where an open air screen will be installed.
IMAGES’04 is a collective effort since over ten galleries, museums and new venues will present exhibitions revolving around this edition’s main theme: Carry me away! Ecstasy, Possession and other Raptures.
IMAGES’04 also presents a selection of films on the same topic. Screenings will mostly be held at the Rex Cinema 4 during weekends, but also at the Oriental in Vevey and the cinema de la Grande Salle in Chexbres.
Numerous artists and filmmakers will be present to discuss their work. For example the Austrian Otto Muehl, the Frenchmen Eric Rondepierre, Philippe Grandrieux and Pierre Coulibeuf, the Italians Gianfranco Mingozzi and Edoardo Winspeare, as well as the American Bill Plympton, to name but a few.
So, there are interesting events coming up in Vevey, an original and idyllic venue where the spectator can discover artistic creation in exhibitions and film projections making the IMAGES’04 festival one of the major visual arts events in Europe.
