Born in 1988 in Aigle, Romain Mader completed a computing education before devoting himself to photography, first by obtaining an Artistic Maturity in Vevey CEPV, then a Bachelor of Photography at ECAL – University of Art and Design Lausanne. In 2011, he was invited by Planche(s) Contact the photography festival in Deauville, where he realized the series De nouveaux amis. Espace Quai1 presents the first solo exhibition of this young artist, who has also been selected to participate in Plat(t)form 2013 organized by the Winterthur Fotomuseum.

This work was carried out in “a city of Ukraine founded in 2007 by a group of German investors willing to speculate on the economy of sex tourism, a growing sector in the former Soviet republic”. Playing with reality and fiction, this true-false documentary combines video, photography and text. Through humor and irony, using a naive discourse and a somehow outdated aesthetic, Romain Mader addresses here loneliness and the absurdity of the modernity.

This series was presented in 2012 as Bachelor in Visual Communication – photography at ECAL / Ecole Cantonal d’Arts de Lausanne.
