Born in 1975 and now based in Toronto, Liam Maloney is a photographer and video maker who devotes the best part of his work to documenting armed conflicts and social themes. In 2013 he went to various refugee camps in Syria and the Lebanon. His series Texting Syria is formed of portraits of these individuals lit up by the light from their smartphone screens: they are exchanging messages with their loved ones. The presentation allows the relationship between these portraits and the messages as they were drafted to be experienced. An unexpected and intimate way of documenting the Syrian conflict, a far cry from the media images that are repeatedly published.
