Subway Art

Born in 1943 in Baltimore, Martha Cooper is closely associated with the birth of Hip Hop in New York. Subway Art is a series of images taken in the 1980s when graffiti covered the city walls and subway trains. In 1981 the series was published and re-released in 2009 for its 25th anniversary. Some of today’s major street-art figures such as Shepard Fairey and the Os Gemeos refer to this book as a ‘bible’ that kick-started their careers as artists. For Festival Images, an extract from this series is presented in an underpass regularly used by graffiti artists and taggers from the region.
