Thomas Mailaender

The Night Climbers of Cambridge

Thomas Mailaender was born in Marseille in 1979 and currently lives between his hometown and Paris. He studied at ENSAD (National School of Decorative Arts) then at Villa Arson in Nice. The Night Climbers of Cambridge is a book that documents nocturnal and illegal climbing on historical buildings in Cambridge organised by students in the 1930s. The book is a real guide indicating the climbing routes to cross the city via its roofs and façades. Intrigued by these forbidden games, Thomas Mailander sought out the original negatives. They are presented outside at Festival Images, on a breath-taking installation designed by the artist so as to highlight the aesthetic and visual value of these nocturnal challenges.
