17 – Paola Jiménez Quispe
Peru (1992)Rules for fighting (Reglas para pelear)
In 1998, Paola Jiménez Quispe was only five years old when her father was found murdered in his car. In 2015, she decided to come to grips with this tragedy and started to piece together his life and death. She found several of his belongings in their family home, including a notebook with Reglas para pelear, eight rules that Paola’s father set himself to gently solve quarrels in his love life.
Laureate of the Special Jury Prize of the Images Vevey Book Award 2021/2022, this photographer applied her father’s tips to help her come to terms with her family’s past. Taking her title from his intriguing handwritten note, her installation Rules for fighting (Reglas para pelear), based on her eponymous book, is a powerful piece on mourning and on resuming a filial relationship that was suddenly severed.
The book Rules for fighting (Reglas para pelear) is available at La Boutique Images Vevey. Co-published by Images Vevey & Witty Books.
