01 Dec 2010 - 10 Feb 2011
Before launching in February 2011 the 8th edition of the Vevey International Photography Award, the gallery Quai1 presents the solo exhibition in honor of Paulo Nozolino, winner of the first edition of this competition in 1995.
Photographer Paulo Nozolino lives and works in Lisbon, after living in London and Paris in the 80 and 90. He has received numerous awards including the Kodak Prize in Portugal and the Leica Foundation Award in France. He was the first winner in the history of Grand Prix Vevey International Photo.
For thirty years, Paulo Nozolino tirelessly travels the world, those travels widely fed his photographic work. In 2005, the Museum of Puerto Serralves presented a major retrospective of his work.
Paulo Nozolino talks about his work in these terms: “I only created lonely characters, lost in the city, faced with environmental degradation. So much that on my images, they lose their identity.” Charles-Henri Favrod, president of the first jury in Vevey, spoke of a” European black series. ”
For this project, Nozolino toured various European cities. In the manner of an urban travel diary, he shows Berlin, Trieste, Venice, Lisbon, Vienna, Budapest, Madrid, Paris with an unusual processing. Dark, sleek, stealth, the photographer’s eye arouses curiosity, confronts his subjects to urbanism and questions history.
En 1995, Paulo Nozolino won the 1st Vevey International Phorography Award organised by the Festival Images.
