Started in 2005, during Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s election, the series “Walk on my eyes” takes a look at the national identity and the sometimes conflicting relationship that exists between tradition and the desire of freedom in this country. Paolo Woods’s photographs break the stereotypes to show Iran in its full diversity. “I wanted to show that the Iranians can be surprising, droll, audacious, insolent and dissatisfied – not the homogeneous block the regime would like us to believe.” As Paolo Woods himself explains, it’s the theatrical nature and the complexity of the Persian society which incited him to do this series of photographs.

This work was presented during the last “Rencontres d’Arles” and published by the Éditions Grasset & Fasquelle, in collaboration with the journalist Serge Michel.

Born in 1970, from Canadian and Dutch parents, Paolo Woods grew up in Italy. He’s based in Paris and has been collaborating with newspapers and magazines such as Time, Newsweek, or Le Monde Magazine since approximately 10 years.

Paolo Woods is specialized in a work of long-term documentary photography. Using this medium as an instrument of investigation, he takes a sharp look at the contemporary world. Each of his subjects, always in connection with the current events, presupposes generally many years of research that enable his photographs “to tell” one particular aspect of the current society.

Since 1999, they have published, with Serge Michel different reportages and signed together various books mixing photographs and texts. Their investigations on the oil industry, the American wars in Afghanistan and Iraq or the conquest of Africa by China were published worldwide. These projects were also shown in various exhibitions.

In 2009, Paolo Woods participated to the 7th Vevey International Photo Award organized by the Festival Images.
