Corinne VionnetFrance/Switzerland (1969)
Corinne Vionnet works on advertising images found on the website of travel agencies. She isolates and enlarges details from these idyllic seashore landscapes. She then subjects her images to tiny perforations which gradually consume the perfect blue skies. On these blue backgrounds, she brings out a myriad of empty spots, reminiscent of a halftone printing effect or the perforated card process that was once used to programme and store digital information. This series highlights the discrepancies between the realities of mass tourism and the dream holidays that tour-operators seek to sell us, while questioning the power of advertising images on our memories and collective memory.
