The Night Climbers of Cambridge

The Night Climbers of Cambridge project takes its name from a book published in 1937 documenting students’ night climbing sessions on the historic buildings of the famous English university town. When Thomas Mailaender spotted the original negatives of these photographs, he rushes to purchase them. With help from Images Vevey and the Swiss Alpine Club, the artist conceived an installation shaped like a 15-meter-high climbing wall to display this archive. The unusual structure invited securely roped visitors to mimic the intrepid English students by climbing to discover a collection of images framed as if for display in a real museum.
