Deadly Cost of Cheap Clothing

There are many garment factories in Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh, and fire constitutes a permanent threat as they only rarely comply with security regulations. For many years, Abir Abdullah has been relentlessly documenting the consequences of factory fires, such as the one in Tazreen in 2012, photographing difficult scenes from the remaining rubble. Awarded the Leica Prize–Reportage by the Grand Prix Images Vevey 2013/2014, the Deadly Cost of Cheap Clothing series addresses the exploitation of Bangladeshi working for the benefit of major Western brands, shedding light on the constant insecurity in which textile workers on the Indian sub-continent live.
