Momentum
For three years, Alejandro Guijarro used a view camera to photograph chalkboards in offices and classrooms at prestigious institutions such as Oxford, Cambridge, Berkeley, Stanford, and CERN in Geneva, known for their studies of quantum mechanics. Shown in life-size and removed from their original context, the boards looked like abstract expressionist paintings where formulae, equations and sponge marks became forms, lines and colors. Presented at Espace Images, the Momentum series revealed the pictorial dimension of scientific research and questioned the status of the photographic image as a work of art.
