Liberté et Patrie

Made for the Swiss National Exhibition in 2002, this short film by Jean-Luc Godard (France/Switzerland, 1930) and Anne-Marie Miéville is a free adaptation of C.F. Ramuz’ novel Aimé Pache, peintre Vaudois. Oscillating between fable and reality, the film Liberté et Patrie – a title borrowed from the motto of the Canton of Vaud, the adopted home of both filmmakers – is both a consideration about representation and an autobiographical evocation. The film has scarcely been shown in theaters, yet, to mark its tenth anniversary, the director agreed to its screening at the Vevey History Museum for Festival Images.
