Annette Messager truqueuse

From the beginning of her career in the early 1970s, Annette Messager has taken on several roles and identities to explore the liminal boundaries between fiction and reality, giving her the freedom to address intimate and societal issues related to women. She records adventures, opinions or fantasies in a series of thematic album-collections illustrated with drawings, notes, commentaries, photos, clippings or collages. She deliberately tackles topics such as children, needlework or make-up in order to denounce the stereotypes traditionally tied to the feminine sphere. The photographs illustrating the album-collections of the Annette Messager truqueuse series constitute a true manifest of her practice.
