Parade
Using photography to produce absurd images, Bernard Demenge created a fantasy world inspired by the banality of the quotidian. In Parade, the artist staged himself in a series of self-portraits produced as GIFs and always according to the same ritual: He sat impassively facing the camera while a hammer, a funnel, some thread or clothes pegs mistreated his face, thus provoking a mix of discomfort and amusement in the viewer. Displayed in a loop on screens located in front of a historic cinema, the short animations showed just how amazingly complex and supple a face can be.
