Snake

For her Snake project, Clare Strand re-appropriated archival images of women playing with snakes. Seven of these pictures were cropped and enlarged to form large abstract com-positions over which the artist superimposed short poems automatically generated via online software. Each image toys with the antagonism between the photograph, which favors an immediate reading of the information, and poetry, which requires an interpretative effort from the reader. Viewers discovered the images in a vault (according to local legend, the home of a sprite) while a machine randomly printed poems on paper streamers.
