What happens in a militarised country where truth merges with fiction? Debi Cornwall asks this question in Pineland/Hollywood. Made in 2021, her short film combines more than 500 sequences taken from 200 Hollywood productions of the last fifty years. Starting with a roadside checkpoint scene, the film unfolds a tale of two points of view in which discerning the true from the false becomes a matter of life and death. Through a series of extracts from crime, action and legal films, Cornwall invites us to rethink the way in which these stories of state violence are constructed and consummated. Pineland/Hollywood condemns police violence and the systemic racism that permeates American society.
