Fireflies, Baltimore
Fireflies, Baltimore
Created in the late 1960s in Harlem, voguing is a performative dance inspired by the poses of Vogue magazine’s cover models to reverse the signs of white dominant power and culture. Frédéric Nauczyciel photographed Baltimore voguers who secretly transform the city during their flamboyant battles. His Fireflies, Baltimore series was displayed outside in the town centre, thus putting this underground culture back onto the streets. Meanwhile, the Théâtre de Vidy in Lausanne presented three video installations, an integral part of Nauczyciel’s project.
