Born to Work

For many years, G.M.B. Akash, laureate of the Grand Prix Images Vevey 2009/2010, documented child labor in the factories, streets and brothels of his country’s capital city, Dhaka. His Born to Work series features young prostitutes reduced to slavery and children picking garbage, thus exposing a complex economic situation in one of the world’s poorest countries. Whether it is parents in need of an extra income or bosses encouraged to produce at lower costs for Western customers, the problem has multiple and apparently intractable causes.
