I Am – Paradox Identity

For three years, Ilse Frech documented the daily life of young Muslim women of immigrant origins living in the suburbs of Mantes-la-Jolie, Bobigny or Argenteuil in France. In the privacy of their homes, the photographer drew a subtle portrait of these women seeking their identity, torn in their femininity between family traditions and a western way of life. Featured for the first time in Switzerland at Espace Images, the I Am – Paradox Identity series encouraged viewers to look differently at life in the Parisian suburbs, a far cry from the usual media clichés.
