President of the Jury for the Grand Prix Images Vevey 2015/2016, James Casebere has been exploring the borders between reality and illusion since the 1970s, creating models that integrate architectures of power and control. Through scale and lighting, his large format prints show staged venues that generate a sense of confusion as to the reality of the reproduced spaces. Most often flooded, his sets lack human presence, thus undermining the so-called almighty power of civilization in the face of the destructive forces of nature, and generating a sense of discomfort and vacuity.
