Water Ballet
Water Ballet
In the early 1980s, Laurie Simmons staged her friends, including artist Cindy Sherman, in an underwater choreographic performance. Inspired by the aesthetic of water ballets from the golden age of Hollywood cinema, her Water Ballet series shows female and male bodies swimming together in complete freedom of movement, briefly liberated from society’s constraints. Presented in backlit windows as through a giant porthole, the installation reproduced the underwater view the photogra-pher adopted while shooting.
