29 Levels of Freedom

Whether head first in the setting or fluttering in the air, Li Wei stages himself in spectacular photo-performances that defy the laws of gravity. This Chinese artist uses mirrors, scaffolding and cables for his stunts, but then tampers with his images to remove any evidence of these indispensable devices. His over 500-m2 photograph entitled 29 Levels of Freedom creates an impressive illusion of deliberate endangerment. During his visit to Festival Images, the artist executed an unprecedented balancing act on the giant fork planted in Lake Geneva since 1995.
