Texting Syria

In 2013, Liam Maloney traveled to Syria and Lebanon for a documentary series about the ongoing conflicts. He noticed that refugees in the camps kill time at night on their cell phones, exchanging messages with their loved ones. Shunning the sordidness of media images, he took intimate portraits of these migrants lit only by their phone screens. In the darkness of an austere basement, the Texting Syria installation recounted moving wartime stories. As they stood in front of each image, visitors received the SMSs written by each refugee on their own cell phones.
