Misunderstanding Focus
Misunderstanding Focus
For their first exhibition in Europe, the Nerhol duo – formed by Ryuta Iida (Japan, 1981) and Yoshihisa Tanaka (Japan, 1980) – presented Misunderstanding Focus, a series of hollowed out portraits. Each of them comprises a hundred prints taken during one same session, superimposed and then carefully cut out. By crafting a tridimensional image by hand, each face takes on a sculptural and distorted aspect in the process. This is a way for the duo to underline the difficulty involved in recreating the complexity of the human face, its distinctive features and countless inner feelings in a single frame.
