No Place Like Home
No Place Like Home
In his Shama studio in Ghana, Philip Kwame Apagya sat his clients in front of painted backdrops representing comfortable homes, luxuriant gardens, airports or cybercafes. These idealized sets are very popular with those aspiring to transfigure their daily life, and render the Western lifestyle accessible, at least for the duration of a photo shoot. While the life-size portraits were presented outside in an idyllic lakefront setting, visitors were also invited inside, where they could take center stage in front of reproductions of the No Place Like Home dream landscapes.
