EYES ON BORDERs

Waltraut Taenzler took screenshots to document an online participatory video surveillance system via a network of cameras set up along the US-Mexico border. Though the site is now inactive, anyone could sign up and report any suspicious activity by email to the local sheriff. Awarded the Special Jury Prize by the Grand Prix Images Vevey 2015/2016, the EYES ON BORDERs series highlights police abusing its power in a hyper-connected society and confronts viewers with civic webcam denunciation. In a secluded basement, the installation evoked the oppressing environment of a video surveillance room.
