Joystick is an immersive participatory project that disrupts the social and aesthetic codes of video games and gaming. As part of a residency at Ubisoft, one of the leading gaming French publishers, Madison Bycroft has created a dense and chaotic universe in which disorientation is the key ingredient. With the use of a joystick, each player can explore an archipelago, whose direction and intention depend on location, weather and other environmental factors. The artist attempts to deconstruct the gender norms associated with behaviour and movement within a given space, inviting us to unlearn proprioception and take the time to experiment. For this new project, Bycroft has created a series of music videos. Confronted with the ‘bosses’ of the various islands, users counter the combat mode in favour of error, disobedience and wandering.
