In 2017, the year of the #MeToo movement and Cierny piontek (“Black Friday” in Poland), Zuzana Kakalikova began reflecting on her image, her place, and her relationship to space and location as a woman. She delved back into the work of Francesca Woodman (1958-1981), an emancipated American artist known for her unsettling, ambivalent, and timeless photographs, often featuring herself. Kakalikova transposes Woodman’s approach into a performative language. At a time when feminist gains are at risk, she uses this first solo piece to question the image of women and the way they are viewed, creating living tableaux with powerful visual and symbolic impact.
