For the first time in a book, Nora Rupp reveals over twenty years of striking self-portraits that depict how social expectations and time shape the body, gestures, and attitudes of women. The artist’s engaged perspective, initially influenced by the work of Cindy Sherman, questions the social construction of archetypes and gender roles, confronting us with the roles we play, our own inconsistencies, and the duties of motherhood, caregiving, and seduction. But why must we play so many roles to fit into the picture? Throughout her work, the image she reflects back to us is one of a metamorphosis that gradually frees itself from all constraints, becoming cathartic. New inner landscapes emerge, revealing the multifaceted nature of women and the artist, as an invitation to dialogue and to reinvent ourselves together.
