The Lovers, The Great Wall Walk marks the end of the intimate and artistic relationship between two pioneers of performance art, Marina Abramović and Ulay. In 1988, after eight years of discussions with the Chinese government, the duo was granted permission to walk the Great Wall of China. They started at opposite ends of the famous wall and walked towards each other. After a final embrace, they parted for good.

The Lovers, The Great Wall Walk is a work about the uncertainty of romantic relationships. Festival Images Vevey sets this project in dialogue with photographs taken by Marco Anelli in 2010, when the couple reunited for Abramović’s performance at the MoMA in New York.

The Lovers, The Great Wall Walk marque la fin de la relation amoureuse et artistique entre Marina Abramović et Ulay, les pionniers de l’art performatif. En 1988, après huit ans de démarches auprès du gouvernement chinois, le duo reçoit l’autorisation de parcourir la Grande Muraille de Chine. Chacun·e part d’une extrémité de la construction et avance vers l’autre. Au bout de 90 jours de marche solitaire, Abramović et Ulay se rejoignent au milieu de la Grande Muraille. Après une dernière étreinte, ils se séparent définitivement.

The Lovers, The Great Wall Walk est une œuvre sur l’incertitude de la relation amoureuse. Le Festival Images Vevey la met en dialogue avec des photographies de Marco Anelli réalisées en 2010, à l’occasion des retrouvailles du couple lors d’une performance d’Abramović au MoMA à New York.
