Desert Cities
Laureate of the Grand Prix Images Vevey 2003/2004, Aglaia Konrad documented the rampant expansion of megalopolises around the world, focusing her attention on the constructions emerging in the periphery of cities such as Cairo, Sao Paulo, Beijing, Chicago or Dakar. The artist photographed frontal, aerial or panoramic views of the mass of concrete from all angles to compose a new type of urban setting. She then reproduced, cut out and photocopied her images, highlighting the standardization of these non-locations. Presented at Espace Images, her Desert Cities project underlined the improbable dialogues between modernist projects, vernacular archi-tecture and the landscape assaulted by human activity.
