Pink Cells
As part of her training at ECAL/Ecole cantonale d’art de Lausanne, Angélique Stehli initiated a series of photographs of prison cells entirely painted in a specific shade of pink which, according to the American Dr Alexander G. Schauss’ 1979 theory, has a particular calming effect. Awarded the Broncolor Prize – Light by the Grand Prix Images Vevey 2017/2018, her Pink Cells, presented inside Vevey’s former prison documents the use of this color supposed to reduce inmates’ aggressiveness in several detention centers in Switzerland. For Festival Images, a sample cell of the prison was covered in pink, inviting visitors to test the effects of this particular hue.
