Cyril Hatt

With snapshots and staples, Cyril Hatt brought viewers into the intimacy of two iconic chalets that only a handful of privileged guests ever visited, those of Claude Nobs, founder of the Montreux Jazz Festival. Jukeboxes, hats, souvenir photos, artworks, musical instruments and other pieces of furniture were reconstituted in 3D in an immersive environment. On invitation from Images Vevey, the photographic installation Le Picotin was first presented in Montreux and a larger version subsequently displayed in Vevey as part of the Hommage aux 50 ans du Montreux Jazz Festival exhibition. Finally, it was included in the retrospective dedicated to Claude Nobs at the Swiss National Museum in Zurich in 2018.

Cyril Hatt goes beyond the limits of photography, considering it as a building material in its own right. Toying with 3D digital technology, he first takes pictures of an object from any possible angle and then staples those 10×15 cm prints together to recreate the object in real size and volume. Invited by the Biennale Images Vevey, the artist reconstituted the escalators of the former EPA on-site, placing an Alfa Romeo, a cash dispenser and various consumer items on various floors of the emblematic former Vevey supermarket.
