Concerned about the social changes he is noticing in his country, Marc Shoul focuses on the new post-apartheid waves of immigration that are transforming parts of Johannesburg into a pan-African Babylon, generating an appealing artistic energy in spite of the dangers and widespread insalubrity. Presented at Espace Images, the Flatlands series documented the sometimes difficult life of Hillbrow residents, taking viewers into a fascinating world where each image sheds another light on an often misunderstood environment.
