Thicker Than Water

With Thicker Than Water at Espace Images, Seba Kurtis presented the conditions of refugees in Europe, starting with his personal experience of exile and clandestine life. Going beyond a simple documentary, to shed light on dehumanization mechanisms at work in migratory processes he physically altered his images by immersing his negatives in salt water, exposing them to sunlight or masking the faces of his subjects. The interventions he inflicted on his images echo the migrants’ suffering and act as visual metaphors for the hardships they endure.
