Julie ou la Nouvelle Héloïse

To mark the tricentennial of the birth of Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778), the Biennale Images Vevey and the town of Vevey organized a contest for photography students at the CEPV to conduct a project related to the philosopher. The winning project by Simon Rimaz was based on the observation that Rousseau’s writing, particularly Julie, or the New Heloise, where stories take place in the region between Clarens and Chillon, has made quite a contribution to the development of tourism on the Swiss Riviera. Presented at the Vevey History Museum, Rimaz’ installation confronts the notion of romantic landscape with its use for commercial purposes.
