Diorama Map Bern

Produced specifically for Festival Images by Sohei Nishino, this huge 100-m2 map comprises over 6000 views taken from the heights of the city of Bern. While the complex photomontage is rigorously accurate, it nevertheless incorporates the artist’s own experience of his stay. Placed on the ground, the Diorama Map Bern installation was an opportunity for viewers to wander through the streets of Bern and explore them in detail, or to experiment from a platform, the view the Japanese photographer had when creating the monumental artwork.

Diorama Map

Sohei Nishino (Japan, 1982) presented Diorama Map, a set of imaginary maps of twelve world metropolises, together with a map of Bern especially commissioned for Festival Images. This was the first time his series had been presented in its entirety in Europe. Each piece entailed taking thousands of analog photographs from elevated posts on-site, followed by meticulous manual cutting and pasting in the studio. With these urban landscapes that recall medieval geographical city maps, the artist delivers his personal interpretation of the cities visited, revealing subjective elements stemming from his own experience there.
