In South Africa, ‘drummies’ are all-female drum majorette teams—a vibrant subculture that continues to thrive often within historically marginalized communities. Driven by an ongoing interest in themes of femininity and empowerment, Alice Mann documented this activity across Cape Town and Johannesburg. Between 2017 and 2020, she chronicled the fierce dedication of these girls and teenagers as they trained in a highly demanding discipline. Set against the backdrop of a primary school, Drummies offers a joyous celebration of sisterhood, capturing the intersection of personal achievement, collective belonging, and shared effort.
