Cristina De Middel

With Endofgamia, Cristina De Middel depicts the links between family and power. The Spanish photographer studies endogamy, a centuries-old practice of marrying within one’s own social circle to preserve privileges. She photographs portraits of royal dynasties painted by famous artists, at the Museo del Prado in Spain. Using multiple-exposure photography, she superimposes different paintings to create a hybrid portrait in which identities become blurred. Presented at the Château de l’Aile, the installation questions consanguinity and social determinism, and exposes the mechanisms by which power is transmitted within ruling families.
