A few months after his mother’s death, three-year-old Francesco Pennacchio asked his father: ‘Will Mummy come back with the spring, like the flowers in the garden?’. This anecdote serves as the starting point for the artist’s long-term project. Alternating between family archives, botanical imagery, self-portraits taken during trips in his mother’s footsteps, Unlike Flowers explores the quest for one’s origins and the role of places in preserving memories. Pennacchio transforms in this way the image into an act of love to prevent forgetfulness.
