5 – Richard Billingham
Indoor
Published in 1996, Richard Billingham’s Ray’s a Laugh is widely recognized as a seminal photobook. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of this landmark publication, Images Vevey is staging a dedicated exhibition at L’Appartement. Billingham documented the daily lives of his father Ray, his mother Liz, and his brother Jason in a council flat in the suburbs of Birmingham. For the first time, this exhibition reconstructs the domestic life shared between these two separate living spaces and delves into the intimacy of family life, marked by Ray’s alcoholism. The artist unveils a family weathering hardships with humour and a joyful and ever present father. Ray’s a Laugh – 30 years paints a family portrait with universal appeal.
