Almerisa is the longest-running series by Rineke Dijkstra, an artist renowned for her unique approach to portraiture. In 1994, she photographed Almerisa, a five-year-old girl from Bosnia, at a refugee center in Leiden, and then in 1996 in her apartement. Seventeen portraits followed, taken approximately two years apart, documenting Almerisa’s growth as well as her gradual integration. Both intimate and universal, this series bears witness to the almost familial bond that the artist and her model wove during their collaboration.
