Produced in 2014, Marianna (The Fairy Doll) depicts a 10-year-old girl rehearsing for her audition to join a prestigious Russian dance academy. In a studio, Dijkstra films Marianna performing the same sequences according to the instructions of her teacher, the installation reveals the constant tension to which the dancer is subjected. Gradually, she begins to show signs of fatigue, revealing her true self. This moving work bears witness to the subtle shift between the carefree nature of childhood and the demands of the adult world.
