A mountain range in the eastern United States, the Appalachians have historically been associated with economic and social deprivation. For nearly twenty years, Stacy Kranitz has been carrying out a wide-ranging project on the Appalachians, bringing together photography, archival material and literary essays. Ain’t No Grave Gonna Hold My Body Down shows how, over the decades, photography has documented poverty while also serving as a tool of propaganda, oppression, and redemption. The installation critiques how images shape a region, its people, and its history.
