Tokuko Ushioda

‘Tell me what’s in your fridge, and I’ll tell you what sort of family you are.’ This phrase could sum up Ice Box series. Tokuko Ushioda turned her lens toward an ostensibly mundane appliance: the refrigerator. Between 1981 and 1995, she peered in her own fridge before expanding the project to her relatives, neighbours, and acquaintances. Taken in 60 households in Tokyo, these images expose the daily habits of the residents, revealing an intimate glimpse into the shared domestic experience. Situated near the Food Museum Alimentarium, the installation provides a personal yet universal insight into the ways in which we consume and live.
