Attractive, inspiring or frightening, images of bodies speak to us. From the black-and-white portrait to the selfie, our bodily expressions shape our identity and the perception of others, between individuality and social roles. This lecture explores how images of the body convey our physical abilities and our desires for beauty. We will provide an overview of classical ideals alongside mediatized cultures that are shifting today’s norms. A mirror of modern life, photography intertwines personal and collective narratives, between facts and dreams. By focusing on the family setting, this diversity of images invites us to take a closer look at the photography that surrounds us and touches us in our everyday lives.

Vendela Grundell Gachoud is a teacher and transdisciplinary researcher in visual culture, with a background in photography and a PhD in art history from Stockholm University. Specializing in photography and digital media within contemporary art, her work is socially engaged and innovative. Through various public and international formats, Vendela Grundell Gachoud highlights issues of identity linked to the images that shape our vision of the world and of ourselves.
