Lobismuller

Lobismuller delivers a photographic reading of the legend of Manuel Blanco Romasanta, the most enigmatic serial killer in Spanish history. The case has raised multiple assumptions and has been haunting the country’s collective memory for 150 years. Laia Abril reconsidered it from the perspective of the killer’s alleged intersexuality. The international première of her work in Vevey was set up in a basement bathed in red light and disturbing music, for visitors to view with a flash light. The book published thanks to the Images Vevey Book Award 2015/2016 is a rendition of an ambiguous world blending feminine and masculine, murder and mystery, science and magic, folklore and historical facts.

On Menstruation Myths

What is a myth? It’s a make-believe story featuring supernatural beings, imaginary situations, and collective fantasies. A myth is a legend, purely fictional and not to be confused with reality. Photographer Laia Abril took an interest in popular myths and legends related to menstruation, commonly referred to as periods. In many societies, unfair beliefs about this biological mechanism are handed down from one generation to another, with disastrous consequences. For example, some people think that menstruating girls and women should abstain from cooking or from touching certain kinds of food. Others feel they should not dance or pray during this time, and some even think they should not even sleep in their own home. These absurd and unfounded ideas isolate those having their period, leaving them confused about what is happening to them, hushed and even afraid to go to school or work. Laia Abril’s exhibition combines texts and images to dispel and rise above the myths regarding menstruation.
